Reflective discussion questions

1. Do you think the children of the Yemeni youths in the video will maintain their culture and traditions?

2. What aspects of their social lives are American? Yemeni?

3. Rakan doesn’t like the way Arabs are portrayed in the movies. Have you ever thought that the way Arabs are shown in the media is unfair? What do you think should be done about this issue?

Comparative discussion questions and Activities

 1. Do you hang out with students who are of different ethnic or racial backgrounds? Make a list of your friends. Write a paragraph explaining what you learn about other cultures by having these friends.

2. Take a piece of paper and fold it down the middle. At the top of one column write “Similarities.” At the top of the other column write “Differences.” Under “Similarities” write the ways the social life of the Yemeni American youths reflects your own. In the “Differences” column write the ways their social life may be unlike yours.

3. Search the Internet and find examples of Yemeni and Arabic music—traditional, folk, and popular. Listen to some of the music and write down your first impressions. Do you like it? Write a paragraph about Yemeni and Arabic music. What does it have in common with the music you listen to? How is it different?

Methodology question

What do you think the interviewer asked the Yemeni youths to get them to talk about their social life? Write two questions that could have been asked that led to the responses in the video. One of the questions should be open-ended (a question with no specific answer.) What would you ask them in order to get information not presented in the video?
